Mexico: A Global Powerhouse

Mexico: A Global Powerhouse

Finally, after nine years, I’ve returned to Mexico. Walking its streets after so long felt just as revelatory as ever. Mexico is a country with a culture so vast, a spiritual richness you can feel on every corner, and a unique energy you can only experience by being there.

In just a few days, you can get a sense of what life is like in one of the world’s largest cities—Mexico City (CDMX). But believe me, you’d need over a year to truly savor Mexican culinary culture. The flavors of Mexico are seductive; the food, the ingredients, the way it’s presented—all so creative and varied that trying to “devour” Mexico in one bite is nearly impossible.

In a city this big, home to more than 22 million people, I can confidently say there’s something for everyone—from Michelin-starred restaurants to street stalls where the aromas force you to stop in your tracks. The variety is endless, and Mexicans are true experts at making you feel at home by offering the very best of their cuisine.

During this trip, I chose to walk. I always say that walking is the best way to truly know a place, and it’s precisely by wandering the streets that you discover street food, commonly known as garnacha mexicana. It’s incredible to see so many food stalls, each with its own magic, its own flavor, its own recipe perfected over countless repetitions until it becomes truly authentic. Recipes passed down from hand to hand, generation to generation, until they turn into popular stands known for one dish or another.

In some areas, the city boasts cozy cafés that are a joy to visit. As a lifelong breakfast lover, I was captivated by places that, after just two visits, I already miss—love at first sight! Most of them are tastefully decorated, with every detail carefully considered, and offer a wide gastronomic variety. I spent several minutes in front of display cases packed with sweet and savory breads, cookies, and pastries, trying to decide what to choose while people came and went. Some stayed to chat, others read the newspaper while eating, and some simply ordered and went on their way. These are spaces with an infectious energy—places with soul, no doubt.

And what about the tacos? That’s a whole other story. You can find them almost anywhere in the world, but there’s no better place to eat them than in Mexico. Though some places try to imitate them, nothing compares to tasting an authentic Mexican taco in México lindo y querido—oh yes! The taquerías, the taqueros, the spinning trompos of meat, the handmade tortillas… it’s all an art form. Going to a taquería is like stepping into the heart of Mexico—from the way they welcome you, to watching them craft those perfect tacos in the blink of an eye. The warmth you feel, even as a tourist, is something to cherish. After leaving, happily full (with a few extra tacos in my belly), I caught myself thinking: the art of the taco is a very serious matter.

“I have to admit, after much thought, I chose Mexico over other destinations—and without a doubt, it was the best decision. After five days and countless long walks, I was able to savor a little more of Mexico. Just a little, because in truth, it takes a lifetime to enjoy every single delight this culture has to offer.”
